Urban Density Maps

All maps use the same color scale, but not size. Scroll to the bottom for an interactive version with hover-over. The maps were originally built for this post on Atlanta public transit.

I like your maps but find the color scheme difficult to use because typically red (hotter) colors represent the highest numbers (and often more rare events) rather than the lowest as represented here. Because the conventional color scheme is opposite, I find the maps much harder to read. Is there are reason you choose it this way with the the "hot spots" and more rare events in cool colors?

  2. Thanks for the feedback. I think it's a problem with using a two-tone color scale- to transition colors, Tableau fades to light gray. (So it's actually intermediate colors that are lightest.) I like the two-tone because I can show more detail, but there's a trade-off, as described. Tableau also has a continuous three-tone stoplight color scale (where the colors don't fade to light), but the downside of that one is that stoplight colors are bad for color-blind people.

  3. A suggestion would be to use a 'Color' Sequential Palette since it this sort of measure doesn't have a mid poin, it is a progressive scale. Low density areas would be light and the color would intensify as the density increases.
